THE HON. LOUISE BENNETT COVERLEY
Louise Simone Bennett Coverley (Miss Lou), OM, OJ, MBE, was born on September 7, 1919 on North Street in Kingston, Jamaica, the only child of Augustus Cornelius Bennett, the owner of a bakery in Spanish Town, and Kerene Robinson, a dressmaker. She was an iconic poet, folklorist, writer, and educator.
She wrote her poems in Jamaican Patois or Creole and worked to preserve the practice of presenting poetry, folk songs and stories in patois. She died on July 26, 2006 in Toronto, Canada.
