Olive Lewin, Musicologist, founded the Jamaica Memory Bank to house the storehouse of interviews she had conducted islandwide with traditional knowledge holders. The Jamaica Memory Bank was merged with the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica in 1990. Her pioneering work has ensured that endangered forms such as Gerreh, Ettu, Kumina, Dinki Mini, among many others, are preserved for generations to come, and has served to showcase the cultural richness of Jamaican folk music that would otherwise have been lost to time.
We all owe her an enormous debt of gratitude.
A setup for Dr. Lewin will be held at the Loise Bennett Garden Theatre on Thursday April 25, 2013, commencing at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
